Some of the basic anatomy of your pet bird or parrot is similar to humans but most of it isn't. There are a lot of terms associated with birds and parrots that are unfamiliar to a lot of bird owners. The list below shows some of the basic parts of the bird anatomy.
- Breast - The front part of the thorax.
- Cere - Waxy or fleshy protuberance at the base of the bill of some birds.
- Ear - Also called the Auricular region.
- Forehead - The brow or part of the front of the head above the eyes
- Foreneck - The front part of the neck above the throat.
- Mandible - The beak consisting of the Upper and Lower Mandible.
- Nape - The back of a bird's neck.
- Nare - The nasal openings. Singular form is Naris.
- Periopthalmic region - The featherless area around some bird's eyes.
- Rump - The projection of the lower back.
- Tarsus - The lower part of the leg below the thigh.
- Toenail - The nails protruding from the toes.
- Toes - Also called the phalanx (plural: phalanges).
- Thigh - The upper part of the leg.
- Throat - The front region of the neck.
