DIY Paperback Parrot Shredder Toy

This is an easy DIY project made from very cheap and easy to find materials. The leather strips and quick links can be found at most stores that sell bird toy parts. The paperback book can be purchased for pennies. I bought the book used in this project for $0.05 at a yard sale.

If you have trouble finding the materials for this project, send me an email and I can give you some good online sources.

Material List

  • 2' 1/4" Width Untreated Leather Strip
  • 1 Small Paperback Book
  • 1 Quick Link (optional)

Tools Required

  • Drill
  • 1/4" Drill Bit
  • Box Cutter or Scissors.

Procedure

See Picture 1 for the required items.
Drill 2 holes in the Paperback Book. More holes can be drilled for larger books. (See Picture 2)
Removed the Colored Book Cover if there is one. This is optional, see notes below. (See Picture 3)
Thread the leather strip through all of the holes. (See Picture 4)
Remove the Glued Spine using a Box Cutter (as shown in Picture 5) or using scissors. This step is optional, see the notes below.
Using the Box Cutter (or scissors) cut the book in half. This step is optional and depends on the size of the book. (See Picture 6)
Tie a knot in the leather strip and affix an optional Quick Link.
Hang in the cage and let the shredding fun begin.

Notes:

The ink used in books may be harmful if ingested. My bird doesn't eat the pages so this isn't an issue for me. This is more true of older books/ink. So watch your bird to make sure it isn't ingesting large amounts of the paper because it may be harmful.
Some colored covers may have harmful inks or plastic in them. My bird doesn't eat the cover (or pages) so removing the cover isn't necessary for my bird but I remove it anyway.
The glue used to hold the spine of the book together may be harmful if ingested. My bird doesn't eat it so removing the spine isn't necessary for my bird but I remove it anyway.
