Top Ten List of
Dangerous/Poisonous
Common Household Items
The bird's anatomy is very efficient at processing the air to get the high level of oxygen required to fly. Unfortunately this makes them very susceptible to common household items that humans are not susceptible to. There are also other items in your house that can be dangerous to a bird in your house. Here's a list of some common Dangerous and Poisonous Household Items.
- Scented Candles and Air Fresheners - They make the house smell good but make it hard to breath for a bird.
- Predators - This includes dogs and cats.
- Cleaning Supplies - Toxic fumes from cleaning supplies can be deadly. This includes (bit isn't limited to) Bleach, ammonia, carpet cleaners, etc.
- Household Plants - There are huge lists (way too big for a top ten list) of which plants are safe and which are not safe. If you don't know for sure then keep them away from you bird.
- Fresh Paint - Thinking about painting a room? Don't forget to take the parrot out of the house and don't bring it back until the house is clear of that lovely "fresh paint" smell.
- Smoke - This includes cigarettes, cigars and tobacco pipes. This also includes cooking smoke if you cook like me and burn everything that you cook.
- Teflon Toxicity - Also know as PTFE. This is a result of overheating non-stick cookware.
- Self-Cleaning Ovens - Self-Cleaning ovens are great. Just turn it on and you can leave. If you do turn it on and leave, don't forget and leave the parrot behind.
- Aerosol Sprays - Most aerosol sprays are hazardous to your bird's health.
- Flying Dangers - Clean windows are dangerous to wild birds trying to fly into your home and dangerous to your pet birds trying to fly out of your home. Ceiling fans are another flying danger. It's best to turn off ceiling fans while the parrot is out of its cage.
