Here are ten reasons people give up their exotic birds for adoption.
- Noise Level - Some species can be VERY loud. According to the San Diego Zoo, a Moluccan Cockatoo's noise level has been recorded at 135 decibels (db). For comparison, a 747 Jumbo Jet produces 140db and human ear damage begins just above 100db
- Behavior Problems - These include but are not limited to biting, screaming, self mutilation, etc.
- Messy - Most species are very messy. Have you heard the expression "Dirty as a Bird" ?
- Expensive - Not only are there the initial costs of the bird and cage but there are also recurring costs such as routine vet visits, food, toys, etc.
- Others Complaining - This includes neighbors, spouses, roommates, children, etc.
- Lifestyle Changes - These include marriage, divorce, having a baby, moving, retirement, etc.
- Changing Habitat - Moving into a condo, apartment, retirement home, assisted living home etc.
- Lost Interest - Some people just get bored with a parrot. This is often in the form of a child that received the bird as a gift and can't or won't take care of it.
- Health Reasons - Primary caretaker illness, allergies, or death
- Too many birds - Some people turn into bird collectors. Before they know it, they have collected more birds than they can care for.
- Lack of Time - Most of us have busy schedules, family, work, school, church, etc. Some people find that they just don't have the time to dedicate to their pet bird.
