Ten Reasons People
Give Up Their Exotic Birds For Adoption

Deciding to give up your exotic bird for adoption is a stressful decision. If you're considering giving your parrot up for adoption, check out the Top Ten Things To Consider About A Rescue Organization link. If, after careful consideration, and as a last resort, you decide to give your parrot up for adoption, check out Kibibi's Rescue Organization List

Here are ten reasons people give up their exotic birds for adoption.

  1. Noise Level - Some species can be VERY loud. According to the San Diego Zoo, a Moluccan Cockatoo's noise level has been recorded at 135 decibels (db). For comparison, a 747 Jumbo Jet produces 140db and human ear damage begins just above 100db
  2. Behavior Problems - These include but are not limited to biting, screaming, self mutilation, etc.
  3. Messy - Most species are very messy. Have you heard the expression "Dirty as a Bird" ?
  4. Expensive - Not only are there the initial costs of the bird and cage but there are also recurring costs such as routine vet visits, food, toys, etc.
  5. Others Complaining - This includes neighbors, spouses, roommates, children, etc.
  6. Lifestyle Changes - These include marriage, divorce, having a baby, moving, retirement, etc.
  7. Changing Habitat - Moving into a condo, apartment, retirement home, assisted living home etc.
  8. Lost Interest - Some people just get bored with a parrot. This is often in the form of a child that received the bird as a gift and can't or won't take care of it.
  9. Health Reasons - Primary caretaker illness, allergies, or death
  10. Too many birds - Some people turn into bird collectors. Before they know it, they have collected more birds than they can care for.
  11. Lack of Time - Most of us have busy schedules, family, work, school, church, etc. Some people find that they just don't have the time to dedicate to their pet bird.
