DIY Dyed Wood Bird Toy Parts
This is an easy DIY project. This article shows how to use Food Coloring to dye wood toy parts. This is very helpful
when building your own toys. This article demonstrates dyeing using popsicle sticks. Food Coloring can be purchased at any grocery story. I bought the food coloring
for this project at Wal-Mart. It included 4 different colors (green, yellow, red, and blue).
If you have trouble finding the materials for this project, send me an email and I can give you some good online sources.
Tools Required
- Glass Dish
- Tweezers (optional)
Material List
- 1 Box Food Colors
- 1 Batch of wooden popsicle stick
- 1 Newspaper or drop cloth
- 1 Set of Latex Gloves (optional)
Procedure
- See Picture 1 for the required items.
- For this article we'll be using the green dye to dye the popsicle sticks.
- Mix water and dye in a glass dish. Use glass or else the dye may stain your dish. Some experimentation is required but I use 1/3 cup of water with 0.24 fl oz dye. Obviously less water means more vibrant colors but less wood can be dyed. (See Picture 2)
- Emerse some of the popsicle sticks into the dye mixture. Use Latex Gloved hands or tweezers to dunk the pieces to ensure all surfaces are covered and let stand for about 1 minute. (See Picture 3)
- Remove the popsicle sticks using the gloves or tweezers. Drain/shake off excess dye and place on newspaper to dry. (See Picture 4)
- Allow the pieces to dry overnight or until fully dry.
- Repeat steps 4, 5, and 6 until all pieces are dyed or until more dye solution is required.
- See Picture 5 for a sample of colors. You can be creative and make all kinds of colors by mixing the dyes. I've included some possible color combinations below to try our if you're very adventuresome.
- The amount of dye used for this project (0.25 fl oz and 1/3 cup water) will dye between 500 and 1000 popsicle sticks. This depends on how long you allow them to soak and how well you drain/shake off the excess dye before placing the dyed popsicle sticks on the paper.
Color Combos:
- Purple - Red and Blue
- Green - Blue and Yellow
- Orange - Yellow and Red
- Brown - Red and Green
- Light Green - Green and Yellow
- Blue Green - Blue and Green
